The acting leader will now take over on a permanent basis after beating his competitor, fellow MP Layla Moran. Sir Ed secured 63.5% of the vote, compared to 36.5% for Ms Moran. At an event in London, Sir Ed said it was time for the party to "wake up and smell the coffee" after only securing 12% of the vote in the last general election. In an email to party members, he said he would launch a "national listening project" to help make the Lib Dems "relevant again", adding: "We won't be able to do this unless we show people we share their values and are on their side." The result comes eight months after the Lib Dem's former leader, Jo Swinson, stepped down from the role after losing her seat in 2019 general election. Ms Moran congratulated her opponent on Twitter, saying: "I look forward to working with him to campaign for a better future for Britain." Sir Ed has been a member of the Liberal Democrats for 30 years, and acting leader since Ms Swinson left the role in December. He was elected as an MP in 1997, but lost his seat of Kingston and Surbiton in 2015 after his tenure as a cabinet minister in the coalition government. In the 2017 snap election, Sir Ed returned to Parliament for the same constituency and will now lead the party's 11 MPs and wider membership. Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-53933470

"Stop the violence and looting," she also said as protests continued over a police shooting in Wisconsin. Mrs Trump urged Americans to stop making assumptions based on race and reflected candidly on US history. President Donald Trump currently trails Democratic challenger Joe Biden in opinion polls for November's election. Mr Trump will address the convention's final night on Thursday. What did Melania Trump say? The normally limelight-shunning US first lady delivered Tuesday evening's keynote address before a small audience, including her husband, in the Rose Garden of the White House. "Like all of you, I have reflected on the racial unrest in our country," she said. "It is a harsh reality that we are not proud of parts of our history. I encourage you to focus on the future while still learning from the past." She added: "I urge people to come together in a civil manner so we can work and live up to our standard American ideals. "I also ask people to stop the violence and looting being done in the name of justice, and never make assumptions based on the colour of a person's skin." Tuesday's convention schedule began with a prayer for Jacob Blake, the 29-year-old black man shot multiple times in the back by police in Wisconsin on Sunday. Smith said she "went off the deep end" after the 2016 TV Bafta Awards ceremony, where she was nominated for her performance in The C Word. She was left "humiliated" by jokes made by the host Graham Norton about her "being a drunk", she said. She then stopped her medication that night, not realising it was dangerous. BBC News has asked Norton's representatives for a comment. The Cilla and Gavin and Stacey star, made the revelations in a forthcoming ITV special documentary called Sheridan Smith: Becoming Mum, which tells the story of her mental health struggles and her journey to motherhood. In the film, she recalled: "Graham Norton was hosting and made a joke, basically at my expense, about me being a drunk. "I was so humiliated, you know, it's a room full of your peers. And people you want to work with, or have worked with. "That night, for me, was like the final straw before my brain totally went off the deep end. "What people didn't realise is that I'd become addicted to anti-anxiety tablets." During the Bafta ceremony, Norton said: "We're all excited for a couple of drinks tonight. Or, as it's known in theatrical circles, a few glasses of technical difficulties." The comment was a reference to Smith's departure from a performance of the stage show Funny Girl, which the theatre management said was due to "technical difficulties". She later pulled out of the show altogether due to mental health issues. In the ITV documentary, Smith said that after the Baftas she went back to her hotel room and she decided to stop taking the tablets she had been prescribed for her condition. It was only due to her friend unexpectedly coming to the hotel to see her that she was able to get help. "It's a miracle she did (come). It's like someone was looking out for me because what I didn't realise is that if you stop these tablets abruptly, you seizure," said Smith. The bypass would take traffic away from Mottram in Longdendale, easing congestion on the trans-Pennine route between Manchester and Sheffield. A new dual carriageway would connect the M67 to the A57 towards Glossop. A public consultation will be held in the winter. Balfour Beatty Atkins has been appointed to design and build the road, and if the plans are approved by the government work could start by spring 2023. About 25,000 vehicles travel along the A57 through Mottram every day, including over 2,000 HGVs, Highways England said. A gazebo and speakers had been set up at the event in Crummock Grove, Bolton, on Saturday, police said. Four men were detained, including a 33-year-old who threw an object at the window of a van and damaged another vehicle's wing mirror before running away. Police chased and Tasered him before arresting him for criminal damage. Greater Manchester Police said a 57-year-old who caused a disturbance in the street when asked to leave was arrested for a public order offence. Two men, aged 28 and 39, who continued to return to the property and abuse officers after being asked to leave were also detained to prevent a breach of the peace. All four men were also arrested for breaching coronavirus regulations and given fixed penalty notices. 'Should be ashamed' The home owner and another organiser of the party were also issued with fixed penalty notices. Ch Insp Steph Parker said: "At a time when the vast majority of Greater Manchester and the country as a whole is pulling together, it is appalling that our officers are still having to attend incidents such as this. "The people involved should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. They are literally putting lives at risk and causing further pressure on our hard working emergency services." She said the police vehicles had been taken out of use for repairs "when they should be being used to help fight crime". Extra restrictions on gatherings have been in place in Greater Manchester since July after a spike in cases. Last weekend, GMP said their officers and emergency call centre staff were "extremely stretched" after "unprecedented demand". It is part of a new policy that aims to limit the risks to public safety posed by QAnon, "offline anarchist groups" and US-based militia organisations. The company said that it had removed "over 790 groups, 100 pages and 1,500 ads tied to QAnon". It also imposed restrictions on more than 1,950 groups and 440 pages. More than 10,000 Instagram accounts associated with the movement have also been restricted. QAnon is a conspiracy theory that believes US President Donald Trump is waging a secret war against a "deep state" network of paedophiles who are powerful government, business and media figures. When asked his opinion on QAnon during a press conference, President Trump claimed not to know much about it, saying: "I understand they like me very much, which I appreciate", remarks which have been interpreted by some as tacit approval for the conspiracy. What action has Facebook taken? As well as targeting the QAnon conspiracy, Facebook said that they had also removed content from other "militia organisations and those encouraging riots", including some antifa (anti-fascist) groups. It said it had growing concerns over groups which have "celebrated violent acts, shown that they have weapons and suggest they will use them, or have individual followers with patterns of violent behaviour". Under the new policy, groups, pages and Instagram accounts associated with these movements will be removed if they discuss potential violence, "including when they use veiled language and symbols" associated with the movement. Facebook will still allow people to post content in support of these groups and movements, although it will "restrict their ability to organise". This means that these pages and accounts will not be recommended to users, the ranking of their content in newsfeeds will be reduced, and titles and hashtags associated with them will be limited in search results. In addition, Facebook will ban the groups from placing adverts or selling products, and prohibit fundraising in their support. Pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will get GCSE grades given by their schools, after a flawed algorithm was scrapped in a series of U-turns. On Wednesday evening, exam board Pearson announced it would re-grade BTecs in line with GCSEs and A-levels. This some means students will no longer receive BTec results on Thursday. Pearson's 11th hour decision affects about 500,000 pupils, 250,000 of whom received their A-level equivalent qualifications last week. The rest were due to collect their grades along with GCSE candidates this week. In a statement, Pearson said their results "had been generally consistent with teacher and learner expectations, but we have become concerned about unfairness in relation to what are now significantly higher outcomes for GCSE and A-levels". 'Really sad' Last Thursday there was anger after 40% of A-level grades were downgraded by exams regulators. School and college heads were left comforting tearful pupils who had lost out on university places, and young people inundated counselling help-lines with fears and anxieties about their uncertain futures. One 17-year-old boy who had just failed his AS-levels told the NSPCC's Childline: "I am feeling really sad. "My friends got such good grades even though they study less than me and it feels unfair." After angry protests by pupils and an outcry from teachers, MPs, academics and parents, the education ministers of each nation switched - one-by-one - to centre-assessed grades (CAGs), following Scotland's example two weeks earlier. These CAG results are expected to be higher for most as it is generally thought teachers and schools tend to be more optimistic about their students chances than exam boards. The Conservative peer will temporarily be in charge of the National Institute for Health Protection and lead the search for a permanent successor. Announcing the government's plan to scrap Public Health England (PHE), Health Secretary Matt Hancock said Baroness Harding had "excellent experience" outside government and had previously worked for the NHS so "her leadership will be vital in driving this forward". But the appointment has drawn criticism, with one MP saying it was a "reward for failure". Baroness Harding has been leading the government's contact-tracing programme, which aims to track down people who have tested positive for coronavirus and their close contacts. Since its launch in May, there have been questions about its efficacy and value for money. An accompanying NHS app has been beset by delays, with a new public trial launched only a few days ago. Health Secretary Matt Hancock initially said the app would be available in May. Baroness Harding's appointment has also drawn criticism in light of the fact that her husband, Conservative MP John Penrose, is a board member of the think tank 1828. The group has in the past called for the NHS to be replaced by an insurance system. It has also said PHE should be scrapped, according to the Daily Mirror. Baroness Harding was head of telecoms giant TalkTalk when it suffered a huge cyber attack in 2015. Hackers managed to access the details of 157,000 customers, including their bank account numbers. TalkTalk was fined £400,000 by the Information Commissioner's Office over the breach, which ended up costing the company an estimated £77m. As well as her role with the contact tracing programme, Baroness Harding is chairman of NHS Improvement. Thomas Duffy, 23, had been out drinking all day with his father on Saturday, December 21 last year, when they were ejected from a bar in Manchester city centre for being too intoxicated. His dad then collapsed on Watson Street and Duffy, of Oldham Street, Hyde, dialled 999 to request an ambulance. Ian Shortman, one of only two cyclist response paramedics that covers the city centre, responded to the scene and began to treat Duffy's father on the ground. In a drunken haze, Duffy then turned on Mr Shortman and began being abusive, shouting and swearing and saying that his father didn't need any help and could get a taxi home. Mr Shortman replied calmly, telling Duffy that his father needed to go to hospital and he was about to request an ambulance. Nevertheless, prosecutor Ms Morgan told Manchester Magistrates Court that Duffy continued to swear and be abusive towards Mr Shortman as he lay on the ground treating his father. "[Duffy] was stood with the security staff nearby to the location, when the defendant took a run up and then rugby kicked [Mr Shortman] with his right foot to the left side of his head and ear, causing him to fall on the floor and be stunned for around two to three seconds," she said. "When he came to, the male had been detained by the security staff." Police were called and Duffy was arrested at the scene. Mr Shortman, 53, was taken to hospital to be checked over but fortunately suffered no serious injury. Duffy was later charged with assaulting an emergency worker and pleaded guilty when he appeared at Manchester Magistrates Court today. Barcelona are still reeling from a humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals and there is now a reckoning looming over the Spanish club. Esporte Interativo claim Messi has told Barcelona chiefs he will leave the club this summer unless significant changes are made. But Sport claim Barcelona chiefs have strenuously denied they have received any communication from Messi expressing a desire to leave and other Spanish outlets are insisting the 33-year-old is yet to make a decision over his future. Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu is under serious pressure to step aside while manager Quique Setien is expected to be sacked. The abysmal display in Lisbon was the first time Barcelona has conceded eight goals since April 1946 and the Catalan side ended the season without winning any silverware. Real Madrid beat Barcelona to the La Liga title and the defeat to Bayern Munich capped off a dismal campaign. Messi’s contract runs until next summer, but Barcelona will need to present the Argentina superstar with an impressive rebuilding plan if they are to keep their star player. Barcelona has faced serious financial issues in recent months and may not have the funds to be able to meet Messi’s demands and overhaul the squad.
